Surgical Technologists are integral members of the operating room team who work closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist and registered nurse delivering direct patient care before, during, and immediately after surgery. Surgical Technologists act as primary scrub persons who handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for the completion of the surgical procedure. These well educated and highly skilled individuals must anticipate the needs of the surgeon and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care. Some specific duties include passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and equipment during the operative procedure. Preparation of the operating room and equipment before surgery, plus cleanup of these items after surgery are also duties that Surgical Technologists perform.

In order to work in Surgical Technology one must be able to move, lift a minimum of 75lbs., and transport both patients and equipment and have the manual dexterity to efficiently handle instruments in a sterile manner.

Workforce Policy

Clinical shall be educational in nature. Student shall not be substituted for personnel during the time of clinical while in the Southeast Technical Institute Surgical Technology Program. All Student activities associated with the curriculum, especially while students are completing clinical rotations, will be educational in nature. Students will not be substituted for hired staff personnel with the clinical institution, in the capacity of a surgical technologists.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: This degree is a Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) program. You may purchase a laptop on your own or from the Southeast Tech IT Support Center

Requirements: All ST & HC classes must have 80% to successfully pass the class.  For all Gen Ed’s a letter grade of a “C” or higher is required.

Clinical Placement will be chosen by the lottery (drawing out of a hat) system. Clinical sites are in the Midwest region.

CNA is required for the Surgical Technology Program. If you have not taken CNA, and/or cannot provide an active CNA Certificate, you will be required to take HC 106 (3 Credit Course). CNA requirement must be completed prior to starting Third Semester.

Students entering a program in any semester other than outlined may not graduate in the expected amount of time.
