The Welding diploma at Southeast Tech introduces students to welding safety, fundamentals of shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and plasma arc welding. Students are instructed in the setup and safe operation of welding equipment for various welding processes. In addition, ferrous and non-ferrous materials and the welding of these materials in all positions and with various joint designs are introduced. The second semester of this two-semester program is used to develop skills in two welding processes, with the goal of successfully completing an American Welding Society welding certification test.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of a Diploma in Welding, a student will be able to:

Science & Technology

  • Gain proficiency in commonly used welding processes. (GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW)
  • Understand characteristics of various metals.
  • Understand how metal/material characteristics affect the welding process.
  • Understand the use and proper identification and selection of fillermetals and electrodes.
  • Understand the use, selection and application of shielding gasses.
  • Determine weld quality and identify weld defects and discontinuities.
  • Understand and correctly apply American Welding Society (AWS) codes and specifications.
  • Implement proper and appropriate safety measures for any weld process.
  • Understand and apply weld symbols, blueprints and engineering drawings.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

  • Identify, isolate and solve issues leading to weld defects and discontinuities.
  • Properly adjust weld parameters of  welding equipment to produce quality welds.
  • Locate and properly interpret AWS weld procedure specifications.
  • Identify weld defects and take proper steps to correct weld problems.
  • Determine the proper weld process and set-up for specific materials.

Professionalism

  • Maintain personal conduct in a manner that reflects well on the individual and the institution.
  • Treat customers, co-workers and the public with respect and understanding.
  • Maintain high standards in all work preformed.
