Mechanical Engineering Technology, AAS

Mechanical Engineers work in support of design, manufacturing, and sales. They use computer-aided drafting software to create layouts of assembly processes, machines, equipment, and parts. They may study costs as they relate to the usefulness of designs. They convey the engineer’s ideas and designs to the crafts workers as mechanics who will make the products. Coursework develops competencies in manufacturing processes, computer-aided drafting, mechanical graphics, geometric tolerance, statics, machine tool design, and computer numerical control.

Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, a student will be able to:

Science & Technology

  • Demonstrate proper operation of CAD related equipment and related software.
  • The ability to read and understand engineering drawings, specifications, mechanical principles and processes.
  • Have a firm understanding of the various components of manufacturing.
  • Know and understand Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Seek further information in their field to keep current through periodicals, trade journals, and ongoing training.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

  • Demonstrate proper safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate proper programming techniques in CNC and programmable controllers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate materials selection.
  • Demonstrate the selection of and logical order of manufacturing processes.
  • Understand and use mechanical prints.
  • Students will demonstrate the use of effective problem solving strategies, including scientific inquiry, with both well-defined and ill-defined problems.
  • Students will provide evidence of meta-cognitive thinking in each of their courses through the process of thinking about their own thinking, reflecting upon their learning process, and identifying gaps in their knowledge and skill.
  • Students will acquire the ability of perspective taking and apply it in a variety of work and life situations.
  • Students will provide evidence of critical thinking within each area of general education.

Additional Information


Student are required to obtain a “C” or better in the following classes: DT 101 , CAD 120 , MCT 121 , MCT 224 , CAD 232 , CAD 242 , to proceed to the next sequential class or to graduate.

Students entering a program in any semester other than outlined may not graduate in the expected amount of time.
