BHT 210 - Substance Use and Addiction 3 Credit Hours This course will examine the biological, psychological, social and cultural factors that contribute to substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. The content will cover historical perspectives as well as best practices in prevention, screening and assessment, counseling and treatment of addictions throughout the lifespan. Individual substance use disorders and behavioral addictions will be explored as well as strengths- and evidence-based helping strategies, mutual help groups, and spiritual resources to support patients and their loved ones. This course will consider racial, cultural, gender-based, and socioeconomic determinants of addiction as well as public policy to support patients with addiction needs. This course will employ a strengths-based, harm reduction approach to understanding support strategies for patients and family members.
