Surgical Technology, AAS

Upon completion of a Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology, a student will be able to:

Technical Skills

• Demonstrates an entry-level knowledge base by successfully completing the Certification exam.

• Student demonstrates the principles of aseptic and sterile technique

• Demonstrates organizational skill and manual dexterity in the preparation of a safe peri-operative environment.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

• Demonstrates correction of a contamination after a break in technique is noted. 

Professionalism 

• Student is punctual and is appropriately attired for all labs and clinical.

• Receives constructive criticism in a positive manner in both lab and clinical setting.

• Displays teamwork in all aspects of the surgical procedure while at clinical.

Communication

• Communicates effectively during sponge and instrument counts during Laparotomy set up.

• Dispenses medication to the sterile field correctly reading  medication name, percentage (strength) and expiration date.

• Student verifies medication name, percentage (strength) and expiration date prior to receiving medications onto the sterile field.
