Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Coding, a student will be able to:
Technical Skills
- Manage health information and ensure data integrity by adhering to documentation standards, data quality principles, and information governance practices.
- Apply clinical classification and coding systems in accordance with official guidelines.
- Use health information technologies and electronic health records to support workflows and information management.
- Support revenue cycle activities through accurate data capture, auditing, and reconciliation.
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
- Analyze documentation, data structure, and workflows to support data integrity and information accuracy.
- Evaluate coding, billing, and reimbursement scenarios to identify errors and apply corrective action.
- Troubleshoot privacy/security, access, workflow, and data quality issues.
- Use analytic thinking to interpret healthcare data and support decision-making.
Professionalism
- Uphold ethical, legal, privacy, and security expectations across HIM workflows.
- Demonstrate professional conduct, confidentiality, accountability, and respect.
- Exhibit emerging leadership skills through teamwork, problem-solving, and participation in improvement initiatives
Communication
- Communicate clearly and professionally in written, verbal, and electronic formats. Produce accurate documentation, summaries, memos, and reports relevant to HIM operations.
