Medical Coding: Professional and Facility Services, AAS


Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Coding, a student will be able to:

Technical Skills

  • Manage health information and ensure data integrity by adhering to documentation standards, data quality principles, and information governance practices.
  • Apply clinical classification and coding systems in accordance with official guidelines.
  • Use health information technologies and electronic health records to support workflows and information management.
  • Support revenue cycle activities through accurate data capture, auditing, and reconciliation.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

  • Analyze documentation, data structure, and workflows to support data integrity and information accuracy.
  • Evaluate coding, billing, and reimbursement scenarios to identify errors and apply corrective action.
  • Troubleshoot privacy/security, access, workflow, and data quality issues.
  • Use analytic thinking to interpret healthcare data and support decision-making.

 Professionalism

  • Uphold ethical, legal, privacy, and security expectations across HIM workflows.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct, confidentiality, accountability, and respect.
  • Exhibit emerging leadership skills through teamwork, problem-solving, and participation in improvement initiatives

Communication

  • Communicate clearly and professionally in written, verbal, and electronic formats. Produce accurate documentation, summaries, memos, and reports relevant to HIM operations.
