Healthcare Office Specialist: Certified Professional Biller, Certificate


Upon completion of a Certificate in Healthcare Office Specialist: Certified Professional Biller a student will be able to:

Science & Technology
  • Understand the basic principles and practices of Healthcare Office Specialist careers.
  • Learn and understand terminology associated with a health care setting.
  • Know the importance, laws and guidelines of privacy, confidentiality and security of the electronic medical record and patient information utilizing HIPAA guidelines.
  • Know the role that electronic and manual financial management plays in a heath care setting.
  • Ability to accurately negotiate and troubleshoot an electronic health record using database software.
  • Understand basic paper and electronic record filing.
  • Comprehend the job responsibilities that are need to work in Healthcare Office Specialist.
  • Learn and practice keyboarding skills to obtain at least at 60 cwam average.
  • Exhibit, observe and review various office procedures in a medical setting including scheduling of patients, office management and patient flow.
  • Perform basic billing at a clinical site utilizing acceptable coding guidelines if appropriate.
  • Transcribe authentic medical dictation of varying degrees of complexity.
  • Apply knowledge of the four basic medical reports along with specialty reports.
  • Implement medical transcription tools to include types of formatted reports.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use reference books in medical transcription.
  • Familiar with the format of the basic types of medical reports.
  • Know the types of medical office notes and correspondence.
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
  • Complete accurate and concise reports in written documentation.
  • Troubleshoot electronic medical record to find risk management issues.
  • Understand the role of the electronic medical record.
  • Complete electronic patient scheduling activities using a EHR.
  • Understand the uses for an electronic medical records in the healthcare setting.
  • Apply correct medical coding guidelines for office visits, services and procedures performed in a medical setting.
