Phlebotomists draw blood from patients at hospitals, blood donation centers and diagnostic labs. The work of a phlebotomist is necessary for blood to be used for research, testing, donation, or transfusion. At Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls, your phlebotomy training program includes instruction in venipuncture techniques, as well as applying tourniquets, locating veins, and labeling and storing samples.
To build your knowledge base, Southeast Tech’s phlebotomist training program focuses on hands-on instruction in a lab and clinical training in the community. Your clinical work will help you learn to:
- Recognize differences in patient vasculature
- Operate and troubleshoot blood drawing devices Interact professionally with clinic/hospital staff
- Effectively explain to patients the blood-drawing procedure
- Quell patient anxiety during venipuncture
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: This certificate is a Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) program. You may purchase a laptop on your own or from the Southeast Tech IT Support Center.
