Medical assistants serve a vital role in the healthcare community in South Dakota and throughout the region. Medical assistants can serve in many different aspects of health care.
This program will provide medical assistants who are able to work in a clinical setting under the direction of a healthcare provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. The medical assistant is able to schedule appointments, maintain medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes, perform aseptic procedures, take vital signs, prepare patients for examinations, perform blood withdrawals, perform non-intravenous injections, provide first aid and assist in office, clinical and laboratory functions. In some healthcare systems, medical assistants may help facilitate medical dictation in a health provider’s practice. The versatility of the medical assistant provides a multitude of pathways.
Graduates of the accredited programs are eligible to sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam.
