Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Coding: Professional and Facility Services, a student will be able to:
Technical Skills
- Abstract and code using recognized classification systems following the Official Coding Guidelines for Outpatient and Inpatient reporting.
- Apply current rules, regulations, compliance, for correct reimbursement under MS-DRG system and IPPS, as well as OPPS.
- Perform denials management and reconcile all payer claims, and patient responsibility for optimal revenue cycle management.
Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
- Research and apply federal and commercial payer specific guidelines while submitting claims.
- Navigate healthcare industry regulations, including HIPAA, HITECH, False Claims Act, Fair Debt Collections Act, and Stark Law.
- Apply anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology to comprehend clinical documentation and code descriptors.
Professionalism
- Execute AAPC/AHIMA code of ethics.
Communication
- Communicate professionally by using clear verbal communication, applying effective listening skills, and educating health providers and staff
regarding Health Information.
