Civil Engineering Technology, AAS

The original engineering discipline, Civil Engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of vital infrastructure engineering works like roads, bridges, canals, dams and buildings.

Civil Engineering Technicians work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers performing state-of-the-art technically advanced tasks. This includes the use of 3D CAD software for the preparation of plans, using the latest surveying instruments to layout the project site, the testing of construction materials for project compliance and calculations for drainage and quantities.

Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, a student will be able to:

Science & Technology

  • Understand the science of surveying involving traversing, topography, road construction and control surveys.
  • Perform routine calculations and apply referenced technical information to water, water distribution, wastewater and wastewater collection.
  • Conduct laboratory unit testing and analysis on soils, concrete and other construction materials.
  • Create highway plans by interpreting and applying referenced technical information and basic knowledge of highway design specifications.
  • Understand the basic concept of mechanics, the action of forces on rigid bodies as applied to bridge and structural load computations (statics & strengths of materials).
  • Create basic site-plans, topography maps, contour maps, survey plats, subdivision maps, detailed utility drawings and 3-D drawings through the use of computer-aided-drafting and field data collection.
  • Understand boundary law, land descriptions and record research.

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking

  • Evaluate information from multiple perspectives, drawing reasonable conclusions.
  • Utilize time management skills to complete work as scheduled.
  • Be able to locate, understand, and interpret information found in plans, blueprints, manuals, graphs, and schedules.
  • Select and use appropriate and effective approaches and tools in solving a wide variety of problems (scientific, mathematical, social, personal).
  • Be able to recognize a problem and implement a response.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of various items that should be carefully observed while completing any field inspection.

Professionalism

  • Exhibit strong work ethic, attendance, self-esteem, integrity, honesty, sociability, and interpersonal skills.
  • Utilize time management skills to complete work as scheduled.
  • Be able to demonstrate understanding, friendliness, politeness to coworkers, as well as customers.
  • Be able to present a positive attitude toward the work environment regardless of situation.
  • Exert a high level of effort and an honest nature in the work place.
  • Work with diverse groups of people; respect diversity and other cultures.
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude by working efficiently in close cooperation with others, being adaptable to changes in plans and giving proper credit for assistance received through outside resources.

Communication

  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner with peers and management, verbally and in writing, through the preparation of technical reports, effective interoffice and business correspondence, and construction specifications and other written contract documents.
  • Use various forms of communication–oral, written, nonverbal—effectively.

Additional Information


All CET and CAD courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or better to continue on with the next sequential course.

Students entering a program in any semester other than outlined may not graduate in the expected amount of time.

*LSS 230  CET/LSS Educational Field Trip is the preferred requirement for graduation; however CET 130 - Civil Internship  can also satisfy the requirement (see Advisor for details).
